Psychological consultations at DDG

Based on a "systemic-strategic short-term therapy" approach, Psychology Consultations at DDG aim at the resolution of functional problems of the alimentary canal, based on a theoretical basis and a constantly evolving practice.

The therapist does not start looking for the causes of a certain type of gastrointestinal disorder, but focuses on the "here and now" with the clearly defined goal of improving the patient's quality of life. It is a question of correcting or improving the patient's lifestyle, and of seeking to eliminate all the daily attitudes which unwittingly disturb or, better still, fuel it.

Methodology

This is a brief therapy, with a limited number of sessions, which acts on two levels:

  1. It causes a change in the way the patient perceives (and builds in part) his or her dysfunctional disorder.
  2. It eliminates (or improves) the dysfunctional behaviors that are the basis of the functional symptoms for which the person has sought help.

In this way, it is possible to obtain a radical improvement and lasting and not superficial or symptomatic.

The ultimate goal of the intervention becomes the displacement of the patient's observation point, from its dysfunctional positioning towards a more flexible and functional prospective, with consequently more possibilities of choice.

Gradually the person acquires the ability to face his problem without rigidity, developing a wider repertoire of strategies to solve it. In order to achieve this objective in the most efficient and rapid way possible, the psychologist's intervention is active and prescriptive and must produce results already in the first sessions.

For this reason, the strategy of the intervention is focused from the beginning on the rupture of the vicious circle created between the attempts to solve the problem and the persistence of it, paying more attention to the present than to the past, by concentrating more on what allows the persistence of the problem rather than on the reasons for the existence of the problem, thus focusing more on solutions than on causes.

Frequency of psychological sessions

In general, the interviews are held at a frequency of 1 every 1 or 2 weeks depending on the type of problem presented and the requirements of the person.

When the "unblocking" of the problem is achieved, which generally occurs during the first 10 sessions, the second phase begins, the "consolidation" phase, which is an important step since it makes stable changes in the Time, thus avoiding relapses.

During this phase, the meetings are held at a frequency of 1 session every 3-4 weeks, with the aim of allowing the person to reinforce his / her autonomy on a daily basis and the results that this person has obtained.

Since this is a brief approach, the desired result is only to restore the complete autonomy of the person allowing him to reappropriate the means of adaptation to the difficulties encountered, which had disappeared because of the functional problem himself.

The therapy is concluded by 3 follow-up checks kept at a distance of 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, in order to verify the maintenance of the long-term results.

Duration of therapy in psychology

A therapy pathway does not exceed 20 sessions and if this should occur, the strategic-systemic therapist interrupts treatment and directs the person to a colleague of the same or diverse orientation.

In the majority of cases, the "unblocking" of the problem occurs during the first 10 sessions and the therapy consists of the following phases:

  • Define the specific characteristics of the problem, and identify the dysfunctional "tried solutions" that make it endure. Provoke an "unblocking" of the problem.
  • Ensure consolidation so that the new perception of difficulties lasts in time. Making the individual autonomous.
